Welcome to the Cecil College Library. This short tutorial will teach users how to search within Ovid databases. To start, you'll want to log into MyCecil (my.cecil.edu) and then click on the "Library" link in the center of the top menu. Once on the Library's MyCecil portal, click on "Databases" in the menu to the left. This brings you to the list of all the databases to which the Library subscribes. This tutorial will cover only those databases run by Ovid, so please check out the video tutorials that cover the other databases available here. Let's find the section called "Nursing/Health Sciences" and then click on "Ovid" to begin. This brings you to the complete list of resources that Ovid offers. Because these are all run by Ovid, it offers the ability to search all of these databases at the same time if you would like. Just check the box next to "All Resources" and then "OK" at the bottom. (Note: some of the resources listed have a limit to how many users can access them at once. If you ever get a yellow error at the top of the screen, simply uncheck those listed in the error to continue). Next, I'll type my search term into the search box. I'm interested in researching Wolff-Parkinson-White treatments. Scroll down to see all of the limiter options. The most important one here to consider is the "Year Published". Check with your professors for their requirements, but frequently articles older than 5 years will not be accepted. Click on "Last 5 years" to limit our results list to the most recent articles. For now, we can ignore the rest of the options below the search box. As you will soon see, these same options appear alongside the results list for easy access. Click "search" to populate the results. Ovid is a little funky in that it keeps the original search screen at the top so you may have to scroll down to find the results underneath. Notice that the limiters from the first screen are now along the left-hand side for easy access. There are a lot more options along this column that you might want to test out on your own, but for now let's look at our results. They include a lot of information up front, including all of the citation information you will need. Click on "Abstract" to show the summary of the article so you can easily tell if the article is on your topic or not. To locate the full-text of the article, look in two places. First, check next to "Abstract" to see if the PDF is available in Ovid. You can see this first result is available. If there is no PDF link, check the right-hand side for two options: if it says "Cecil Library Full Text" click that link to access the article in another one of our databases. If it says "Interlibrary-Loan Request", such is the case with the second result, this means that the article is not available in any Cecil College Library databases however, you can request the item be sent from another library. Simply click the link and fill out the form and a librarian will email you when the article arrives. Please allow up to a week for the item to arrive. Once the full text of the article opens, there are more useful tools along the top. "Email" allows you to email the article to yourself. The email will include all of the citation info as well as the full text of the article. I find that these are the easiest ways to collect all of your articles in one place for future reference. The third option is a citation feature. When you click on it, the citation for this specific article appears in a multitude of citation styles. You can see APA style near the top, or scroll down for MLA. A word of caution, however: these are created by a computer, and therefore are not always perfect. Always be sure to read over the citation and make any necessary changes prior to handing in your assignments. (For more information on citations, see the multiple video tutorials listed under "Creating Citations"). This concludes the tutorial.
