Hi, my name is Lisa and today I'm going to show you our new search platform on the McFarlin Library website.
00:06 |
It's called Discovery.
00:09 |
Here in the middle you'll see a search bar.
00:10 |
It says search the TU Libraries.
00:13 |
You can search by everything, books, articles or media.
00:17 |
The default is for Everything.
00:19 |
There is an advanced search feature.
00:21 |
If I click on that, it's going to give me some more flexibility to use my boolean operators and search indexed terms or attributes for articles and other materials that you may find in the library catalog.
00:35 |
And then if you need to expand those search terms, you can use And, Or, Not and will be a limiter and things that return will have to be from every box that is filled out or it's going to be an either or situation.
00:50 |
So that will be your expander and not will be a limiter and that will actually exclude certain things from a field.
00:59 |
If I go back to the homepage if you want to search the Mabee Legal Information Center or the MLIC library, you will need to click this link to navigate to their page.
01:11 |
They use the platform named Alma and so their search feature will be slightly different than what you see on our page here at McFarlin.
01:20 |
If I want to search our James Joyce collection, I type in the name of the author I'm looking for.
01:30 |
It's going to tell me we have about 24,000 results.
01:36 |
It does say that they have expanded the search to include related terms or I can default back to the original search that I asked for.
01:47 |
Off to the left here you'll see refining options.
01:50 |
I can limit to types of books or peer reviewed.
01:54 |
If I'm looking for an article right now I'm searching in all of the University of Tulsa libraries except for the maybe legal information center, or I can choose to look for one specifically, whether that be the University School or HCAR at the Gilcrease Museum, Special Collections, or the McFarlin Library.
02:15 |
If I select one of these libraries, it will automatically remove the option for the peer-reviewed articles because they are subscription based and not technically housed or owned by McFarlin.
02:29 |
If I want to look for articles instead, I can remove that check mark and you notice the peer reviewed option does come back.
02:37 |
If I go down to format, I see a variety of format options that I can choose from.
02:43 |
You may also search by date range and a variety of other resources here.
02:49 |
One of the amazing things about Discovery is that it is part of a single sign on for the University of Tulsa now.
02:58 |
So if I go back to the homepage and look in the top right hand corner.
03:01 |
It does say my library account.
03:04 |
Once I click on that, especially if I'm already logged into another platform, it will log me in automatically.
03:10 |
If not, it will prompt you to log in using your single sign on in here you can search the Discovery platform.
03:16 |
You can look for course reserves or click on the link for different resources, which is our A to Z Database list, our research guides to help you with certain subject matter in certain courses and request research appointment with the librarian when, whether in person or virtually if I go back to my search and again I'm going to type in James Joyce, my list of results are back.
03:47 |
If I see a variety of things that I would like to come back to later, I can click the save button here and it will actually add to my saved items.
03:57 |
And so now that goes to one and I can tick that as many times as I need to so that when I come back later I don't have to reselect all of the things that I found interesting the first time around.
04:08 |
I can go to my saved items list and now I have it in complete list that I was looking through earlier.
04:15 |
You will also see a variety of other options here in Discovery.
04:23 |
You will be able to do a one click link to interlibrary loan.
04:28 |
If a book is on hold and you recall it, you'll have that ability to do so as well right out of this platform if you can.
04:36 |
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to a librarian and ask us for help.
04:42 |
Or you can go to the ask us link here at the top of the page and you'll see a variety of ways to get a hold of us.
04:47 |
Thanks for watching and I hope you have a great day.
